Anya Ayoung Chee, Former Miss Trinidad & Tobago Universe 2008 & Season 9 “Project Runway” Winner

If you weren’t tuned in October 27th 2011, you missed an ultimate Project Runway Finale extravaganza. The My Lifetime hit, Project Runway, brought in a viewing audience of 2.99 million nationally for its 9th season this year. Known for their unique pool of designers to its on-show competitive drama, Project Runway’s season granted former Miss Trinidad and Tobago Universe 2008, Anya Ayoung Chee, with the opportunity to showcase her eye for fashion and ability to design. The talented Anya Ayoung Chee took this season of Project Runway by storm with her welcoming personality and her beautiful Caribbean-influenced designs. Catching much criticism for her short-term sewing skills (a trade she picked up in the last 4 months prior to the show) to her “inability to design a jacket” (that of which fellow cast mates/competitors spoke frequently of), Anya was still able to walk away with the likes of fashion-forward fans and head judges Heidi Klum, Michael Kors, and Nina Garcia.

Making her way to the finals, Anya was given the opportunity to showcase her designs in this year’s NY Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week 2011, where she competed against 3 other contestants for $100,000 and the title of Project Runway Winner. Upon waiting for the Project Runway Season 9 Finale to make its debut, Anya made her way back home to Trinidad, and promoted plans of using her “Fan Favorite” earnings to setup a microfinance loan to assist young creative people in the Caribbean to start up their own businesses. “It’s an unsupported region of commerce, so I’m excited to start that right away,” speaks Anya.

Caribbean’s Next Top Model

When Tyra Banks created “America’s Next Top Model” in 2003, the show caused a stir in the fashion world and it seemed like almost every country wanted its own variation of this “fashion-themed” reality show.  Eight years later, the show has been adapted in almost 120 different countries and has FINALLY reached the Caribbean.  Casting for CNTM (Caribbean’s Next Top Model) began this summer and was open to 35 territories across the region.

(Pictured: Bahamian Model, Hughnique D. Rolle)

With all this buzz and excitement surrounding the show, TEMPO reached out to upcoming Bahamian Model Hughnique D. Rolle to get her take on CNTM. Ms. Rolle is also a track and field champion, currently holding the 15 hundred and 3 thousand meters national and junior national records for the Bahamas.  She officially started her modeling career back in 2010 and has been in several shows in the Bahamas, modeling not only for Bahamian designers, but for international designers as well. This past summer she modeled designs for Flo Miller, a designer from Paris.

When asked how she felt about CNTM, Ms. Rolle said that “It looks  pretty good, and I would definitely tune in.  According to how it goes, I might even participate in the future.”  She says that if there is a Bahamian representative on the show, she would not be biased and only support her, but instead “would support whoever I think looks the best and may be the best Caribbean model.” In terms of what she looks forward to most on the first cycle of CNTM, she expressed that she’s looking forward to the designers that will be on the show and believes that the show will be a good way to gain recognition as a model, and get yourself out there.

Antigua Nice

From the 365 beaches (one for everyday of the year) to the captivating beauty and warmness of Antiguans – Antigua is Nice to say the least.   The island nation of Antigua and Barbuda boasts all the wonderful amenities of a paradise nation: beautiful beaches, rich culture and a promising future.  If you are interested in doing a little shopping or sightseeing, you have to visit the capital of St. John.  There you will find local markets, fabulous boutiques and the wonderful Museum of Antigua & Barbuda.  Another highlight of Antigua is cricket.  Cricket is just not a game but a passion for locals and one of their heroes in the sport is Sir Vivian Richards who played and captained the West Indies Cricket team.  Antiguans are proud of their homeland and their culture and Tempo Networks is proud to be an active promoter of all things Antiguan.

The carnival season is another highlight of Antiguan culture and TEMPO Water was there to assure that all revelers and participants were ready for the action by sponsoring the “Fit for Carnival Operation” with Party Monarch- Tian Winter and fitness guru Kevinia Francis.  TEMPO Water was present throughout the entire carnival season- where we sponsored the Blue Jeans event, APUA Power Rumble and Wadadli Brewmasters Jouvert Troupe.  TEMPO is also very active in promoting the public health of Antiguans.  We were the official sponsor of the Lions Club of Antigua free Prostate Cancer Screening, which took place on August 13th.  The event was a great success with over 500 met getting screened.

Antigua has opened its arms and heart to TEMPO Networks and TEMPO is committed to its growth and relationships with the island.  TEMPO wants to give big-ups to some of the notable advocates of TEMPO Networks and TEMPO Water, Mr. Bruce “Dymond” Barthly of Vybz FM 92.9 Tempo sees you and thanks you for the support as well as the countless of retailers that has Tempo Water on their shelves.  From the big outlets like Kennedy’s Club to the “mom & pops” like Silver Lining.  TEMPO and Antigua has a beautiful future together.   Remember, you can watch TEMPO on Karib Cable Channel 69 and Communications Network Channel 172.  Believe TEMPO when we say “Antigua Nice”.

West Indian Day Parade 2011

The 2011 West Indian Day Parade was as amazing as promised! The streets were alive with the vibrant colors of all the different costumes; the parkway moved with the spirit of all the masqueraders who jumped and whined to the rhythms of all the soca/dancehall/reggae tunes that were being played from the large speakers behind each truck.  The sidewalks were filled will enthusiastic onlookers who were more than proud to wave their country’s flags, and many of whom were so captivated by the music that they could not help but get into the streets and dance along with the masqueraders.  The smell of barbeque chicken and other West Indian delicacies filled the air. At every turn, one was surrounded by West Indian culture.

This was my third year attending the parade, and my first year (and first time ever) being a masquerader.  I must say, it was   more fun being a part of the parade than being a spectator.  I couldn’t help but feel a sense of pride by being surrounded with individuals who not only understood the West Indian culture, but also were just as proud to showcase and enjoy a major part of what makes us who we are as West Indians. Our culture, Our music, Our dances, Our food, Our happiness.  At Monday’s parade, one couldn’t help but realize that we truly are ONE CARIBBEAN, ONE FAMILY.

Artist Feature: Kevo Star

Kevo Star is a fresh, new artist on the rise bringing what he calls “World Music” to the entertainment industry. Kevo, born in the United States to Haitian parents,  grew up watching his uncle, a member of a famous Haitian band, perform and create great music. Being exposed to this as a child sparked his own interest in music and performing. Originally on the path to becoming a lawyer, Kevo gave all of that up to pursue his true calling of being a performer. He began his career as a back-up dancer for noted artists such as Elephant Man, Sasha and Ivy Queen at On the Reggae Tip, which is an annual Reggae concert held in New York City. From there he decided to move onto bigger things and pursue his dream of becoming a solo recording artist.

When asked how he would classify his music, Kevo responded, “My  music is World Music.” His desire is to create music that people from all walks of life can enjoy and dance to. After beginning his career as a hip-hop artist, Kevo realized that he didn’t want to be restricted to any particular genre of music. He didn’t want his creativity to be limited in any way which is how he came up with the concept of “World Music.” He hopes that he will be able to bring passion and pure dance vibes back to the music industry uniting people all over the world.

Coming from Caribbean parentage, Kevo voiced his appreciation for TEMPO Networks and their vision of creating a pan-Caribbean community. He believes that it is as a great way for Caribbean people to share their cultures not only with each other, but with people around the world.

So what can the world expect from this budding star…? Great things of course!! Kevo has a lot in store for you and  he is ready for the world to see the hard work and dedication that he has put into his music. Currently Kevo has three hot tracks “Fly Away, “She Wanna” and “Confused” which can all be heard on his website www.kevostar.com. He is also in the process of filming his first music video for the song “She Wanna” coming soon to TEMPO.
